Sailing
The round robin was based on Swiss League principles which are
to provide better quality racing by matching teams of similar
abilities. Thus the team that was 1st at the end of sixteen
rounds didn't meet, nor was it likely to have met, the team
that was 32nd but did meet teams in the top quartile of the
results more than once. This phenomenon was prevalent throughout
the round robin.
We
provide the maximum racing we can by using continuous starting.
Because
the computer breaks ties at the end of every round we cannot
use the tie-breaker in the rule book as it relies ultimately
on “a game of chance”. Instead we have devised one
that measures quality of opposition met.
For
all our systems to work together and produce a good event we
needed a better-than-ever results service. Our aim was to have
the results of a race posted before competitors reached the
jetty.
Similarly
the race schedules had to be posted as soon as they were produced
or you would be late for starts.
The
four quarter-finals were sailed together as a unit and then
the two semi-finals. This not only gives important racing over
the entire course but also, more importantly, means we can add
more races to the round robin.
