Website Wonders
Let’s declare an interest before we start. We’re writing about how well the website has done and we’re obviously pretty close to it so we’re biased and seemingly immodest.
But there is another much more important aspect to it. Just as we’re always urged not to shoot the messenger when the message is bad so we mustn’t praise the messenger when the message is good. What we are about to report is seemingly excellent news for the website but it is, of course, not for the website at all – it is for what the website is about, the Wilson Trophy.
Google keeps the most amazingly comprehensive stats about every website that signs up for its Analytics service. The Wilson Trophy site, in its 2009 guise, signed up just before launch day on 18th December 2008.
There is so much information that it is almost impossible to single out a few stats that will satisfy everyone so we will use (in Google-speak) Pageviews, Visits and Countries. Visits and Countries are self-explanatory with the possible proviso that a Visit may be from a visitor arriving more than once (Google also supplies figures about first time Visitors). A Pageview is recorded every time a page is accessed. A visitor coming to the site who looks at nine pages will be recorded as one Visit and nine Pageviews.
So, armed with these explanations, here we go:
From launch to the eve of the event (Thursday 30th April) we had:
62,605 Pageviews and 6,159 Visits from 40 Countries
Over the weekend from Friday 1st May until Tuesday 5th May we had:
53,929 Pageviews and 4,581 Visits from 44 Countries
For the whole period those add up to:
116,534 Pageviews and 10,740 Visits from 44 Countries
and they're still swarming to the site as I write this on the morning of Wednesday 6th May!
West Kirby Sailing Club has an event about which the world seems to want to know.
