Since the inaugural World Team Racing Championship in 1995, the profile of team racing has changed radically. Team racing forms part of the training agenda for the National Junior and Youth Training Squads - reflected in the 23 entries at the Team Racing Youth Nationals this year. With boats provided, team racing is the ultimate level playing field on which to develop racing skills, particularly boat- handling, rules and close quarter tactics. Cost is no barrier for the participant and the social side of team racing is legendary.
Keen supporters of team racing, the Royal Yachting Association has designated West Kirby Sailing Club as the first Team Racing Academy, under a three year pilot scheme. With two flights of six boats, based on the famous Marine Lake - the venue for the Wilson Trophy, the Academy provides visiting sailors from Clubs and Universities unrivalled facilities for training and competition. |
