Saturday’s proceedings were called to a halt at about 1030 due to very strong winds. West Kirby were unlucky enough to be first race in the second fleet, and therefore had to launch the boats. The following 25 minutes involved capsizing, righting, more capsizing and eventual rescuing for one West Kirby boat. The racing was officially cancelled at 1330, with only one race being sailed.

Sunday's weather was a welcome change. A nice force 2-3 greeted us at Barton Sailing Club, and we were first race of the morning against Newcastle. A good start by all three West Kirby boats ensured that we had a 1, 2 combination at the windward mark, with West Kirby squeezing in a close 3rd. Our 3rd place boat then ensured the race was one by implementing a nice bit of gapping. In the next race we lost to Bath 2, 4, 5, 6 due to a very poor start. Race 3 saw West Kirby awarded a penalty for a port starboard infringement by a York boat at the windward mark to allow West Kirby to take 1, 2 and the race. Race 4, against Leeds 1 looked like a certain 1, 2, 4 win for West Kirby, but after a penalty for the West Kirby boat in 4 and a very shifty last beat, we scraped the win 1, 3, 6.
After lunch we were out against Warwick, and we suffered the same fate as with Bath 2. Poor starts by West Kirby boats meant we were never in the race and lost 4, 5, 6. The last two races against Birmingham 2 and Cardiff, West Kirby won with convincing a 1, 2, 3 and 1, 2, 5 respectively. We finished 3rd overall in our league, 1 win behind Bath 2 and Warwick who both progressed to the Semi- Finals, with Warwick the eventual winners.
Special thanks to Jim Bramley for his support and transport, Dave Cheshire and Emma Petit for accommodation and also to Dan Taylor for his support.
I believe it was another great weekend for the 'development team', steepening our learning curve and increasing our hunger for more team racing experience. We are all grateful for the opportunity.
Lee Taylor.
